Backstroke Games record toppled twice
Australia’s
Emily Seebohm and Canada’s Kylie Masse both smashed the Commonwealth
Games record in their heat swims in the women's 100m backstroke at the
Optus Aquatic Centre on Friday morning.
Swimming first in heat four, Australian backstroke champion Seebohm broke her own Games-record time of 59.37 set four years go in Glasgow, coming home in 58.91 seconds.
Just minutes later, Masse went even faster, clocking 58.70. Masse set the world record of 58.10 last year in Budapest.
"I hadn't really put a specific number on the time I wanted to go this morning," Masse said of her new Games record.
"There are heats and semifinals so I just have to stay focused and prep myself for making it through to the final and throwing down a good performance."
Both move on to the semifinal on Friday night at Optus Aquatic Centre ahead of the final on Saturday night.
