Laryea Kingston Former Ghana Midfielder, Says The Current Black Stars Team Lacks Quality Leaders.
The former Hearts of Oak player who played with Gyan between 2005 and 2010 says he was disappointed with the demeanor of the Black Stars players towards the captain in Ghana's goalless draw game with Uganda in the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers last Friday. In an interview with Ultimate FM, he said "Leadership is very important in the team. As a leader, the people around you must accept you. But the moment, I don't think the players accept their leader (Gyan) because sometimes on the pitch, you can feel some negative energy towards Gyan. I'm not close to the team, but watching from afar you feel that something isn't right. For example during the Uganda game, I could feel Gyan didn't stamp his authority. One instance he wanted to take the free kick and another player took the ball from him. You had four or five players around the ball every time there's a free kick, and that's not right ". Asamoah Gyan took over the captaincy for Ghana in October 2012 succeeding retiring John Mensah. Is a new captain one of the solutions to the predicament in the team? Does the team lack leaders on the pitch? I remember the days of Steven Appiah when we had leaders like Muntari and John Mensah.
