Tokyo 2020 proposes 5 additional sports across 18 events to the IOC
TOKYO, September 28, 2015 - The
Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee announced that it has proposed five
additional sports across 18 events International Olympic Committee (IOC)
for inclusion at the 2020 Olympic Games. The sports in question are
baseball/softball, karate, skateboard, sports climbing and surfing, and
would add 474 athletes to the Games. As
announced by Tokyo 2020, the proposed sports represent both traditional
and emerging, youth-focused events, all of which are popular both in
Japan and internationally that will serve as a driving force to further
promote the Olympic Movement and its values.
Tokyo 2020 has
become the first ever organising committee to be given this unique
opportunity to contribute to the design of the Olympic Programme, thanks
to Olympic Agenda 2020.
Bowling, squash and wushu are the sports that failed to make through from the eight finalists. The final decision will be made by the IOC at the 129th IOC Session in Rio in August 2016.
