Manya Jorpanya ‘Ngmayem festival’ starts Sept.16

THE CHIEFS and people of Manya Jorpanya Traditional Area in the Greater Accra Region will celebrate their 21st Ngmayem Festival, which is expected to start from September 16 to 23, 2019.
Under the able leadership of the Chief of the Manya Jorpanya and Senior Asafoatse of Shai/ Divisional chiefdom, His Royal Majesty Dr Nene Tei Djanhene Korabo IV, the occasion will see all seven families under the Manya Kitipong fraternity of Manya Jorpanya.
It will mark the 21st anniversary of the enstoolment of Dr Djahene Korabo and would be celebrated on the theme ‘National Development, the Role of Traditional Leaders in the 21st Century.’
Activities
Activities to celebrate this important festival will start on Monday, September 16, with the arrival of citizens, families and invited guests. On Tuesday, Sept 17, there would be clean-up activities and on Wednesday, Sept 18, would be the day of Remembrance of Ancestors.
On Thursday, Sept 19, they will pay a visit to their Ancestral home in the Shai Hills and then on Friday, Sept 20, there would be football games and a free medical screening by Narh-Bita Hospital.
The grand durbar would be held on Saturday, Sept 21, with dignitaries such us Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Member of Parliament for Assin Central in the Central Region, Dr Samuel Amo Tobbin (Executive Chairman) of Tobinco Group of Companies, Mr Akwasi Agyemang, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, and representatives of the South African High Commission, all expected to grace the occasion.
Sunday will be a thanksgiving service day and on Monday, September 23, picnic will be held at the Sports Complex to climax the festival.
The Ngmayem is the Dangme word for millet, and the festival is celebrated every year to remember a period of drought and hunger followed by abundant rains that led to a bountiful harvest of millet.
The abundant rains and harvest happened after the ancestors of the area had offered prayers to the gods.
