Countdown to 2016 LSG Athlete of the Year Award: Women’s 100m Rankings

MI Second Liquid Sports Ghana Athlete of the year award by reviewing the nation’s best athletics performances from the year 2016.

11 Ghanaian athletes qualified for the Olympic Games, an increase in the three athletics representatives who last competed in the London 2012 and Beijing 2008 Games respectively.

The number was also an improvement over the 10 athletes who represented Ghana at the Athens 2004 Games.

The track and field team in Rio comprised six individual qualifiers: Flings Owusu-Agyapong (100m), Janet Amponsah (200m), John Ampomah (Javelin), Emmanuel Dasor (200m), Alex Amankwah (800m), and Sean Safo-Antwi (100m) and the 15th-placed women’s 4x100m relay team namely Gemma Acheampong, Beatrice Gyaman, Dorcas Gyimah, Persis William-Mensah and Akua Obeng-Akrofi.

100m event. Flings Owusu-Agyapong had a breakthrough year, recording the fastest women’s 100m time in 2016 with a personal best 11.26s.

Ghana’s flag-bearer at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, the Canadian based athlete had earlier qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games after clocking 11.30s in the 100m at the Coral Gables in Florida on April, 9th.Her performance ranked her 90th in the world and 7th in Africa which gives her 1144 points under the IAAF’s Ranking Points Table.

Flings is followed in second and third by her national teammates Gemma Acheampong and Beatrice Gyaman with 11.43s and 11.55s respectively.
