The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has issued a Clarification
The
World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has issued a clarification notice on
the prohibition of meldonium and how positive cases should be
prosecuted, following a number of failed tests for the drug since its
appearance on the Prohibited list since January 1st.
Athletes
who have tested positive for the drug, including five-time Grand Slam
winner Maria Sharapova, have now been offered a potential lifeline,
given that WADA has admitted that there is "limited data available on
excretion studies relating to meldonium".
WADA's clarification Notice now
states that such athletes could face limited to no punishment if below
one microgram of meldonium was detected and if the failed test happened
before March 1.
